Can The 123 Corporation read my email?

Once you complete our sign up process, even we cannot read email you send using Secret 1-2-3. Your email is encrypted and decrypted on your computer with cryptographic keys that are stored on your computer. Secret 1-2-3 never has possession of your private key. Additionally, email sent using Secret 1-2-3 is never routed through our servers,  and we do not have access to those messages.

What happens if I forget my password?

We do not store your Secret 1-2-3 Password on our servers. If you forget your password, we cannot recover it. We have a feature which enables you to backup your account using answers to three questions that you choose. If you forget your password, all you have to do is answer the three questions and you can reassign a new password to your account. If you do not run the backup wizard, there is no way for you or The 123 Corporation to recover your account in the event you forget your password.

We STRONGLY advise new users upon completing the sign up process to immediately make a backup of their Secret 1-2-3 to an external hard drive, CD/DVD, USB memory stick or a network folder with restricted permissions.

Is Secret 1-2-3 for Outlook only free while it is in beta?

The base version of Secret 1-2-3 for Outlook will always be free. We will sell a premium version with additional features in the future.

What standards are you using for encryption?

Secret 1-2-3 is based upon industry standard PKI infrastructure. We use x.509 format certificates with RSA-2048 keys. Our Secret 1-2-3 message format uses RSA-2048 and AES-256. All communication between your computer and our servers is also encrypted within an SSL tunnel.

How do I know if my company needs email encryption for compliance?

If your company is affected by any of the following legislation, you may be required to encrypt email:

  • Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX)
  • SEC regulations
  • NASD regulations
  • Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI)
  • US state privacy & data encryption regulations, such as those for Massachusetts (MA 201 CMR 17.00) and Nevada (SB-227)

General Compatibility

What versions of Microsoft Outlook® are currently supported?

The current Secret 1-2-3 beta supports 32-bit versions of Microsoft Outlook® 2003, 2007 & 2010.

Can I still send 'regular' email from Outlook?

Yes. Secret 1-2-3 simply adds an additional "Send Secret" button to your new message compose window. You can always just click the standard "Send" button, and choose to send your email without protection. See "How can I share..." below for more options.

Why do I get a 'conflict' message sometimes in my inbox?

We have recently had reports from users indicating that they are sometimes seeing a 'conflict' message in their Outlook inbox. If you are using Outlook in Cached Exchange mode with a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), there is a known bug in BES which can cause a timing issue. We are already in the process of evaluating several ways to work around this, and expect to have a new release solving the trouble posted soon.

I use Outlook 2007 with IMAP and Secret 1-2-3 does not recognize my account when I reply to a Secret email?

If you use Outlook 2007 with IMAP, Secret 1-2-3 requires that the account name of the email account matches the email address. To modify this in Outlook, click on the Tools menu and choose Account Settings. Select the email account you are using with Secret 1-2-3 and click the change button. Click the More Settings button and change the Mail Account Name to your email address and save.

I use Outlook with the Outlook Connector for Hotmail and Secret 1-2-3 does not recognize my account when I Send Secret™?

If you use Outlook with the Outlook Connector for Hotmail, Secret 1-2-3 requires that the account name of the email account matches the email address. To modify this in Outlook, click on the Outlook Connector menu and choose Account Settings. Select the email account you are using with Secret 1-2-3 and click the change button. Click the Advanced button and change the Mail Account Name to your email address and save.

Not at this time. We are currently reviewing issues regarding the 64-bit versions, and will post more information as it becomes available.

Using Secret 1-2-3™

How do I "Send Secret™"?

You need to be using a supported version of Outlook, and have a working email account. Once you download, install and sign up, it is simply a matter of clicking the "Send Secret" button, and your messages and all attachments will be completely encrypted. How can I share Secret 1-2-3 with clients, co-workers, customers and others?

Very easy, simply click the "Send Secret" button. Your message will be encrypted and sent to your recipient, with easy instructions to download and install. Once your recipient has signed up, they will be able to read your message, as well as send to anyone they choose. More details can be found in the "How to Share Secret" section.
